The Art of Wet Molding: The Process Behind Every EXODOS Copenhagen Piece

Every EXODOS Copenhagen piece begins with the same foundation: 7oz / 2.7mm premium Italian, full-grain natural vegetable-tanned cowhide, hand-stitched from start to finish. What sets each piece apart is the technique used to shape it - wet molding, a meticulous, hands-on process that gives every accessory its precise fit and lasting structure.

Vape holsters, phone cases, insulin pump pouches, EDC pouches, cigarette cases, folding knife sheaths, earbuds cases - all of it is wet molded by George. (The one exception is our fixed leather sheaths, which are crafted using a different technique.)

 

 

What Is Wet Molding?

Wet molding is exactly what it sounds like: leather is shaped while wet, then left to dry into a form it will hold for the rest of its life. It's a technique that rewards patience and precision - and it's at the heart of everything we make.

1. Soaking the leather The process begins by submerging the leather fully in water, allowing it to absorb moisture evenly throughout. This is what makes the hide pliable enough to mold.

 

2. Shaping by hand While still wet, the leather is carefully folded, stretched, and shaped by hand around a wooden pattern. This step demands a steady hand and an eye for proportion - every curve and crease is formed manually, piece by piece.

3. Drying naturally Once molded, the leather is left to dry at its own pace, with no shortcuts. As it dries, it locks into the exact shape it was formed around, resulting in a piece that's fitted rather than forced.

 

 

4. Stitching and finishing After drying, each piece is hand-stitched using 1mm waxed nylon thread and hand-dyed. The result is an accessory built to last a lifetime — and to look better with every year of use.

 

 

Why Wet Molding Matters

Wet molding isn't just a manufacturing step - it's what gives EXODOS Copenhagen leather its character and durability:

• Precision fit. The technique allows us to shape leather to exact dimensions, so every pouch and case is built to its purpose.
• Softer, more supple leather. The molding process naturally conditions the hide, making it more comfortable to carry and wear.
• Lasting shape. Most importantly, wet-molded leather holds its form. Unlike unmolded leather, it won't warp or lose structure over time.

Wet molding is a skill that takes years to master - from reading how a hide will respond to water, to shaping it with the right tension, to knowing exactly when it's ready to stitch. It's slow, deliberate work, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
